A veve is a spiritual, magical and cryptic symbol used in various Spiritual practices more prominent in Vodou. In essence veve are part of the astral, cosmic and solar tradition of the invisible world. In Haitian vodou, they are geometrical drawing representing the lwa. According to Milo Rigaud, Veve Collect the solar fluid which passes through earth, the transition is realized by the virtue of what Vodou doctrine call pregnancy of Erzulie . The energy reciprocally crosses the 4 point cardinal of the life.
In ritual veve will first, appropriate this fluid with the loas which they symbolize . Second, an appropriation and conformance with the magical objective that it was created upon is united and third the combined magic is emited upon the material plan by the Hougan or mabo or person who traces it, consequently they formulate or summarizes the trinary essence of magic and the loa. It personified the law and evoke the energy.
This is reason why veve are traced before vodou ceremony and ritual. The geometrical element is traced at the foot of a tree or poteaumitan since these trees or the poteau mitan are consecrated and are identified with the laws as an innate order and accumulators of these molecular energy.
Veve in essence is traced with either corn meal, gun powder, coal, indigo based the on loa the veve is intend to invoke. While tracing a veve a candle must be lit and accompany by the servite reglement which will be a conduit for the loa. In Haitian vodou, veve are an essential part of the ceremony. In the mainstream practice they are founded in the peristle hounfor, the servite space of practice. In summary they are the identifier of the loa, their representation. They are of the most potent when use correctly in vodou.
Introduction
The Taino are the original inhabitants of Haiti (Ayiti), and their profound influence continues to shape Haitian culture today. Despite facing near-eradication due to colonization, the Taino left an enduring legacy that persists in daily life, language, cuisine, music, spirituality, and place name. The Taino contributions are especially evident in Haitian Vodou, where their symbols—such as the Veve, a symbolic form of writing—blend with African traditions. Taino influence can be found in art, ritual, and the spiritual practices that define Vodou. Their legacy is both silent and influential, woven through the cultural and spiritual fabric of Haiti.
The Taino and the Haitian War of Independence
Despite often being overlooked, the Taino played a significant role during Haiti's 1804 war for independence. They contributed to the development of maronage practices and the underground railroad system, which enabled Black individuals to escape into the mountains. Many Gad and Loa served in Vodou have roots in Taino daily spiritual practices, a connection reflected in ritual songs and ceremonies. The foundations of Vodou are thus deeply embedded in Taino traditions, which also share roots with African practices.
Persistence of Taino Spirituality in Haitian Traditions
Despite centuries of external influences and transformations, Taino spirituality continues to persist in certain Haitian traditions. This enduring presence is especially evident in the rituals and practices associated with Vodou, where echoes of Taino beliefs and customs are woven into the fabric of Haitian spiritual life.
